AWARD OF HONORARY PRESIDENCY to Major General Gert Wessels 14 May 2008 |

The 14th of May was an important day for the German-American Men's Club Munich. Following its constitution Major General Gert Wessels, the new Commanding General of Wehrbereich IV / South-Germany, was nominated as Honorary President. With a formal dinner at the "Spatenhaus" President Prof. Dr. Robert Schmucker welcomed General Wessels, pointing out the important role the German and US Armed Forces played in the past, promoting mutual respect, understanding and friendship between their peoples. Therefore, following a tradition in Munich, the club is honoured to have the highest German military representative in South-Germany as a new member.
Major General Wessels ensured in his short response that he feels comfortable as a Territorial Commander to support German-American friendship, having even US troops stationed in his area of responsibility.
Major General Wessels is an engineer officer of the German Army having great experience in commanding, staff-functions and planning up to MOD level. Since October 2007 he is in his function as Commanding General of Wehrbereich IV. He commented that his starting in Munich was not that easy because as a "Lower Saxoner" he had to get used to the local people and vice versa.
We all wish Major General Wessels all the best in his new function and also enough spare time to participate in the club activities. |
