Unexpected fine weather added to our high spirits when we set out by bus in the morning to visit the German Center for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen.

After a friendly welcome by the Head of Public Relations we were shown an interesting film with details about the responsibilities and the scope of the Center as well as its scientific national and international role in the field of aeronautics and astronautics.  Amongst others, DLR is the main contractor of the entire Galileo mission.

A captivating lecture about remote earth reconnaissance by satellite provided insight into the activities of the DLR regarding innovative methods in data gathering and interpretation, preparation and development of new missions, their related ground control operation as well as the processing of the data gathered, up to their practical application.

A guided tour of the Control Center for various astronautic and satellite missions rounded off our visit to DLR.

We continued our trip to the “Sacred Mountain” Andechs were we recouped with the help of Bavarian delicacies at the “Klostergasthof” before we continued to visit the Cloister Brewery and the Cloister Church.  There we had two highly interesting tours by a competent guide in which we learned, on the one hand, about the brewing process of the tasty Andechs beers and on the other about the history of the Cloister Church where the composer Carl Orff has been laid to rest.

At the end of our visit to the Church the wife of one of our club members surprised us with an accomplished organ recital. We returned to Munich satisfied after a day full of varied impressions.
